CONSUMERS PREFER BOTTLED WATER, RECOGNIZE IT AS A HEALTHY CHOICE, AND THINK IT SHOULD BE AVAILABLE WHEREVER DRINKS ARE SOLDRecent Survey Results Find That Americans Want Bottled Water Readily Available

More than 3 in 5 Americans (63 percent) say bottled water (still and/or sparkling) is among their most preferred beverages, followed by coffee (62 percent), according to a new national survey. Fewer Americans (58 percent) say soft drinks (regular and/or diet) are among their most preferred drinks.Nearly all Americans (94 percent) believe that bottled water is a healthier choice than soft drinks, and 93 percent say bottled water should be available wherever drinks are sold. The survey, conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of the International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) of more than 3,000 U.S. adults aged 20 and older, also found that among those who have ever purchased bottled water, those who identify bottled water as among their most preferred beverages are more likely than those who identify soda as one of their most preferred beverages to recycle their water containers.“This poll is consistent with consumption figures released earlier this year that show, for the first time in history, bottled water is the No.1 packaged beverage in the United States (by volume),” says Jill Culora, IBWA’s vice president of communications.“People are shifting away from less healthy packaged drinks and choosing the healthy option – bottled water.”

The Healthy Consumer Choice

In today’s on-the-go society, most of what we drink comes in a package. Consumers choose bottled water for several reasons, including its refreshing taste, healthfulness, reliable quality, zero calories and additives, and convenience. In fact, since 1998, approximately 73 percent of the growth in bottled water consumption has come from people switching from carbonated soft drinks, juices, and milk to bottled water.

Water helps nearly every part of the human body function efficiently.

Considering that our bodies are almost two-thirds water, it is important to understand water’s role in a healthy lifestyle. Here are just some of the things water does in your body:

  • Your brain is 75% water

  • Water cushions joints

  • Your blood is 92% water

  • Water is required for breathing

  • Water carries nutrients & oxygen to all cells in the body

  • Water protects and cushions vital organs

  • Muscles are 75% water

  • Water helps your body absorb nutrients

  • Water moistens oxygen for breathing

  • Bones are 22% water

  • Water helps to convert food into energy

Americans Drink More Bottled Water for Health and Hydration

The International Bottled Water Association (IBWA) reports that in 2012 overall consumption of bottled water jumped by 6.2 percent to 9.67 billion gallons. Per capita consumption was an average of 30.8 gallons of bottled water, up 5.3 per cent. Bottled water increased in absolute volume more than any other beverage category in the U.S. Changes in per capita consumption indicate persistent interest in a product that consumers embrace as a healthful alternative to other beverages.
